2024 Paris Olympic Controversy: Algeria’s Imane Khelif Wins Boxing Event Amid Gender Debate

Algeria's Imane Khelif, competing in the Olympics for the first time amid global attention, won against Hungary's Anna Luca Hamori in the women's 66kg quarterfinals at Paris North Arena. She secured the victory by unanimous decision.

  • Italian boxer Angela Carini, who faced Khelif and withdrew from the match 46 seconds in, has apologized with regret for her actions.

  • Carini, who did not shake hands with Khelif post defeat said, “All this controversy makes me sad...I want to apologize to her...I was angry because my Olympics had gone up in smoke.”

A Closer Look

In regards to the boxers 2023 disqualification by the International Boxing Association, it was NOT because of high testosterone levels. Misinformation has been spread that this was the case, but the IBA confirms that their testosterone was never checked and a “separate and recognized’ test was given.

  • Khelif’s Father broke his silence saying, "Having such a daughter is an honour because she is a champion, she honoured me and I encourage her and I hope she will get the medal in Paris. Imane is a little girl that has loved sport since she was six-years-old."

  • The now Olympic winner said, "I am a woman."

  • The IOC has called the IBA's testing "flawed."

Would Republicans Actually Vote For Kamala Harris?

Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign is launching "Republicans for Harris" to attract Republican voters who are disillusioned with Donald Trump.

  • This initiative will feature well-known Republicans, especially those who supported former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and will begin with events in Arizona, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

  • The goal is to make it easier for Republicans to support Harris by hearing directly from other Republicans making the same choice.

  • The Harris campaign is trying to rebrand Harris as a moderate candidate in comparison to Trump, whom the mainstream media and the White House have dubbed as “extreme.”

Some Context

The effort is led by Austin Weatherford, a former chief of staff to Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who is endorsing Harris.

  • Weatherford and other notable Republicans, including former Governors Bill Weld and Christine Todd Whitman, and former Trump press secretary Stephanie Grisham, are backing Harris.

  • They believe she will defend democracy, protect freedoms, and ensure Trump doesn't return to the White House.

  • The campaign will focus on Republican-to-Republican outreach, with these prominent figures participating in rallies and events to support Harris' candidacy.

Lebanon Reports American Drone Show Down Over Yemen

Another U.S. military surveillance drone has been shot down in the Middle East, this time in the Sa'dah region by the Houthis in Yemen.

  • This marks the seventh instance of such an incident over Yemeni territory. What's notable is that this happened less than 24 hours after another U.S. military drone was taken out in Syria.

  • Images of the downed drone are circulating online, though the official report by Reuters is brief.

While losing an expensive drone is significant, these unmanned devices are designed with the risk of being shot down in mind.

  • It's unlikely to lead to a regional conflict, and the U.S. military may not give much attention to the incident publicly.

  • They have many more drones still monitoring the area, and such losses, while unfortunate, are part of their operations.

More Paris Olympic Controversy: Convicted R*pist Competes

🚫 Initiative Overview: Florida State Senator Lauren Book has initiated a petition addressed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the participation of convicted pedophiles in the Olympic Games. This petition comes in light of the case involving Dutch volleyball player Steven van de Velde, who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics despite his conviction for raping a 12-year-old girl in 2016. Senator Book shared on social media, "SIGN OUR PETITION demanding the IOC immediately adopt strict policies to prevent convicted pedophiles from participating in the Olympics: https://bit.ly/46uRPCU.”

🤔Who is Steven van de Velde? Steven van de Velde, born on August 8, 1994, in The Hague, Netherlands, started his beach volleyball career at a young age. Demonstrating early talent, he won the Under-20 Dutch National Championships in 2011. He continued to perform strongly, competing at the 2015 European Games and securing a third-place finish at the 2018 Blooming Beach Aalsmeer event on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. His consistent efforts and performances after overcoming legal challenges enabled him to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. His return to the Olympics not only showcases his skills and determination but also highlights his complex path back into the sport.

🔗 Nevobo's Perspective on Van de Velde's Participation: Michel Everaert, general director at Nevobo, discussed Steven van de Velde's return to beach volleyball. "We know Steven's history. Before he expressed his desire to return to beach volleyball at the time, we spoke extensively with him but also with NOC*NSF, among others," says Everaert. "He was convicted at the time according to English law and he has served his sentence. From then on, we have been in constant contact with Steven, who has now been fully reintegrated into the Dutch volleyball community. He is proving to be an exemplary professional and human being and there has been no reason to doubt him since his return. We fully support him and his participation in Paris, which he and Matthew have earned."

⚖️ Policy and Ethics Discussion: The petition starts a conversation about the rules and fairness in big sports events like the Olympics. It asks if groups like the IOC should do more and whether people who have committed serious crimes in the past should be allowed to compete.
