Democratic National Convention Expects Massive Protests This Week in Chicago

100,000 anti-Israel protesters will gather in Chicago for the DNC next week, causing many House Democrats to have fears of violence.

  • According to reports, three main protests are being planned for Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, led by leaders of four muslim groups and more than 150 organizations from around the country.

  • Oussama Jammal from the US Council of Muslim Organizations criticized President Biden, saying, "He sent weapons to Israel, but couldn't send food and medicine."

  • Protesters are also upset with Vice President Harris for her supportive stance on Israel.

Last November, Members of Congress were evacuated from an event on Capitol Hill after police clashed with protesters that blocked the door to the building, leading to several arrests.

  • Scores of Democratic lawmakers have also accused protesters of vandalizing or trying to force entry into their congressional offices.

  • House Democrats attending the DNC next week are now being advised by security officials not to book hotel rooms under their own names because "hotels have been getting random calls asking for people."

  • They also want them to avoid certain areas because they expect violence.

Disney Uses Streaming Terms of Service to Toss Out Wrongful Death Lawsuit

The Walt Disney Co. is trying to toss out a widower’s wrongful death lawsuit, arguing he agreed to settle any disputes with the entertainment giant and any of its affiliates out of court when he signed up for a free trial of its streaming service Disney+.

  • In February, Jeffrey Piccolo sued Walt Disney Parks and Resorts over the death of his wife at a restaurant at Walt Disney World.

  • His wife, Kanokporn Tangsuan, who was allergic to nuts and dairy, dined at Raglan Road Irish Pub, in the resort's Disney Springs shopping, dining and entertainment complex in Florida. Tangsuan, a New York doctor, experienced a severe allergic reaction and died.

  • Jeffrey Piccolo alleges that he and his wife both questioned the restaurant waiter numerous times when they dined and that the waiter assured them that the order would be allergen-free.

Disney’s attorneys requested Jeffrey Piccolo’s $50,000 case be dismissed arguing that by signing up for a free 30-day trial of Disney+ in 2019, and again when purchasing the theme park tickets in 2023 through his Disney+ account, Piccolo agreed to the streamer’s terms of service, which includes that “all disputes” with “The Walt Disney Company or its affiliates” be settled out of court via arbitration.

Disney’s attorneys said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by the family’s loss and understand their grief. Given that this restaurant is neither owned nor operated by Disney, we are merely defending ourselves against the plaintiff’s attorney’s attempt to include us in their lawsuit against the restaurant.”

Democratic National Convention Event Rundown

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) kicked off Monday in Chicago, where Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to accept the party’s nomination as the 2024 presidential candidate later this week.

With Democrats celebrating over the last few weeks due to rising poll numbers since President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid on July 21, here’s what’s on the agenda as more than 4,000 delegates gather:

Monday:

• Democrats will pay tribute to Biden, who passed the torch to Harris last month. The president and First Lady Jill Biden are expected to take the stage.

• Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson will introduce 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who will address the delegates.

Tuesday:

• Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff will give welcome speeches, followed by former President Barack Obama.

Wednesday:

• Former President Bill Clinton and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi will reportedly speak on “A Fight for Freedom.”

• Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is expected to accept the nomination as Harris’ running mate.

Thursday:

• Harris will address the delegates and officially accept the nomination as the 2024 presidential nominee.

On Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her first campaign speech, focusing on economic issues in the U.S. Harris pitched policies on child tax credits, housing and ways to reduce high prices. However, her proposal for a federal ban on “corporate price gouging” in response to rising grocery costs faced significant pushback. Pundits from both parties criticized the idea as unrealistic, warning that it could lead to higher prices or the creation of black markets.

The economic address from the vice president comes after Harris has yet to sit down for an interview with the media or release an official campaign platform on her website as of Aug. 19.

What To Watch For:

Over the weekend, tens of thousands of pro-Palestine protesters gathered near the DNC site, voicing complaints about the party as the Israel-Hamas war continued. Thirty delegates are expected to represent the “uncommitted” movement and withhold endorsing Harris unless her administration commits to a firm stance on embargoing Israeli arms.

X Operations No Longer Allowed in Brazil After Elon Musk Feud

Elon Musk is being forced to shutdown X operations in Brazil claiming the Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes threatened to arrest its legal representative in the country if they did not comply with orders.

Now X is removing all remaining staff in the country “effective immediately,” but service will still be available to the people of Brazil despite suspending all operations there.

To add some context, last April, the Brazilian Supreme Court Justice demanded that certain accounts on X be blocked in Brazil amid an investigation into "digital militias" that he alleged were spreading fake news and threats against Brazil's supreme court during the reign of President Jair Bolsonaro.

To some, his actions have been controversial, from investigating former President Jair Bolsonaro, arresting protesters on slim evidence or banishing his far-right supporters from social media, de Moraes has been aggressively pursuing those suspected of undermining Brazil’s fragile democracy.

Musk said X would not comply his demands — so de Moraes has opened a separate investigation into Musk.

Musk claimed on X that his employees in Brazil were facing consistent threats of arrest by authorities and then called the Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the “Dictator of Brazil.”

"We are lifting all restrictions," he wrote on X. "This judge has applied massive fines, threatened to arrest our employees and cut off access to X in Brazil. As a result, we will probably lose all revenue in Brazil and have to shut down our office there. But principles matter more than profit."

X Global Affairs also claim they have received further demands for censorship and for the personal account information of X users.
